In a notable first for the next generation of a political dynasty, 17-year-old Kai Trump took the stage at the RNC Wednesday night, offering a rare personal perspective on her grandfather, the former president.
The eldest daughter of Don Jr. made her public speaking debut. She spoke for a short time, describing the former president as a loving grandpa instead of the controversial politician many people know him as.
“Many people don’t see the side of my grandfather that I know,” Kai said, describing everyday moments that paint a picture of normalcy. She shared anecdotes of the former president sneaking treats to his grandchildren and taking a keen interest in their academic progress.
The teenager’s appearance adds to a growing list of predominantly women speakers who have sought to humanize the former president during the convention. Her remarks softened the former president’s public image amid his ongoing legal challenges.
Kai acknowledged her grandfather’s legal woes but emphasized his continued concern for her well-being. “Even with all the court cases, he always checks on me,” she said. She also spoke of Trump’s encouragement for her to strive for success, playfully adding, “He sets a high bar, but maybe I’ll catch up to him someday.”
Don Jr. introduced his daughter, noting it was her first time giving a speech on stage. The former president appeared visibly pleased throughout his granddaughter’s address, beaming as she spoke.
While too young to vote in the upcoming election, Kai has publicly supported her grandfather on social media. She recently shared a photo of herself with the ex president after winning a golf tournament at one of his courses. Following an assassination attempt on the former president last Saturday, she posted a supportive message alongside an image of her grandfather in the aftermath of the incident.
