Justin Lin is officially on board to direct the much-hyped Space Jam sequel that is set to feature current NBA star LeBron James in the lead role.
Not only will Lin direct Space Jam, he is also co-writing the script with Andrew Dodge and Alfredo Botello, reported The Hollywood Reporter. Lin, whose recent work includes Fast & Furious 6 and the forthcoming Star Trek Beyond, is producing the movie with his Perfect Storm Entertainment.
It was first speculated over the summer that the long awaited Space Jam sequel had officially locked down James as the star. Back in July, James and his company SpringHill Entertainment signed a deal with Warner Brothers in regard to the project. James’ previous forays into acting include his scene-stealing turn in Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck as an exaggerated version of himself.
The original Space Jam movie came out in 1996 starring former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan. It followed Jordan as he tried to prepare a team of Looney Toons for a game of basketball against a squad of towering alien villains that would ultimately determine their fate. The live-action/animated flick earned $230.4 million worldwide.
A release date for the sequel has yet to be set.
