According to his attorney, Justin Baldoni is “absolutely” planning on countersuing Blake Lively for her accusations of sexual harassment and leading a retaliatory smear campaign against her over their recent movie.
On Dec. 20, Lively accused Baldoni of causing her “grief, fear, trauma and extreme anxiety” while they filmed the recently released movie It Ends With Us.
Baldoni fiercely denied the allegations through his attorney Bryan Freedman, calling them “completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious.”
Freedman told NBC, “We plan to release every single text message between the two of them…We want the truth to be out there. We want the documents to be out there. We want people to make their determination based on the receipts.”
Plaintiffs named in the case against Lively will be Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios, Baldoni’s publicist Jennifer Abel and his crisis publicist Melissa Nathan.
The movie, produced by Wayfarer Studios, started production in June 2023 and was released in August 2024 to unanimous negative reviews for its romanticism of domestic abuse, slammed for its portrayal of the abusive partner, played by Baldoni, as desirable and sympathetic. Critics concluded the story arc represented the detrimental belief that abuse can be overlooked in the name of a passionate relationship.
Another highly controversial aspect of the film was the promotional interviews, in which Lively was excessively light-hearted despite the heavy content and promoted the film as a rom-com.
In her lawsuit, Lively detailed memories on set when Baldoni shared explicit details about his wife, forced her to look at inappropriate content and asked her invasive questions about her own sex life. She further alleged Baldoni pushed to add and improvise “physical intimacy that had not been rehearsed, choreographed, or discussed with [her].”
Lively cited multiple forms of evidence, such as text messages, and accused Baldoni and Wayfarer producer Jamey Heath of pressuring her to do a full nude scene, despite no previous agreements of such from Lively’s end. Furthermore, she alleged that Baldoni and his promotional team had manipulated social media against her to destroy her reputation.
A direct timeline for Baldoni’s lawsuit has not been shared, though Baldoni already filed a lawsuit against The New York Times for libel on Dec. 31. Baldoni’s lawsuit against The New York Times accused the paper of reporting “cherry-picked” opinions on the situation that intentionally excluded necessary details and used deceiving language.
Lively followed up by suing Baldoni for retaliation for her sexual harassment claims on Dec. 31. She seeks punitive damages for mental anguish, humiliation, lost wages, emotional duress, belittlement, frustration and embarrassment.
The New York Times said its article had been “meticulously and responsibly reported.”
