Just in time for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be discharged from hospital in D.C. after dealing with an unexpected infection, the Justice is now facing ethics questions regarding apparent efforts his wife Ginni Thomas made to overturn the 2020 election.
Justice Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in the nation’s capital last week and was treated with intravenous antibiotics after his condition was diagnosed as an infection. The Supreme Court has not confirmed what Justice Thomas was dealing with, other than stating that it was not a Covid-19 infection. He will be reviewing arguments he missed during his absence by reviewing written briefs and audio recordings of the hearings.
The new revelations regarding Ginni Thomas were released by the House January 6th Committee. It had previously been reported that Thomas attended the Jan 6th “Stop the Steal,” rally that resulted in the now-infamous Capitol Riots. She said she “played no role” in the direct planning of that day, but texts obtained by the committee show that she repeatedly urged White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to work to undermine the election.
On November 10, 2020, Thomas sent Meadows a text reading “You are the leader with [Trump], who is standing for America’s constitutional governance at the precipice. The majority knows Biden and the left is attempting the greatest Heist in our HIstory.” These texts weren’t one-sided either, with Meadows repeatedly responding to continuously affirm his commitment.
“This is a fight of good versus evil. Evil always looks like the victor until the King of Kings triumphs,” Meadows wrote, “Do not grow weary of well doing. The fight continues. I have staked my career on it. Well at least my time in DC on it.”
Even after the riot, Thomas sent a text to Meadows expressing her displeasure in then-Vice President Mike Pence’s refusal to block certification of election results. “Most of us are disgusted with the VP and are in. listening mode to see where to fight with our teams. Those who attacked the Capitol are not representative of our great teams of Patriots for DJT!!” Thomas wrote.
As her husband has sat during Supreme Court cases regarding the riots, this revelation has reopened debates as to when a Justice should be disqualified from hearing arguments. However, Justices in the highest court in the U.S. are entirely responsible for recusing themselves from cases they may not be impartial on.
