Julia Louis-Dreyfus was overcome with emotion while accepting her latest Emmy Award on Sunday evening.
Louis-Dreyfus won her fifth consecutive Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy category last night for her work on Veep. Towards the end of her acceptance speech, Louis-Dreyfus dedicated her Emmy to her late father, William Louis-Dreyfuss.
“I’d like to dedicate this to my father, Willie Louis Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday,” Louis-Dreyfus said through tears. “And I’m so glad that he liked Veep because his opinion was the one that really mattered. Thank you.”
A couple of years ago, Louis-Dreyfus’s father admitted that he didn’t necessarily believe that she would go on to become such a force in the TV industry – but wasn’t entirely shocked by her successes either.
“Well, I couldn’t tell whether she was going to be a star,” he told Today. “But I knew how natural she was, and how much she liked life, and fun, she was always very funny and fun to be around.”
During a lighter part of her Emmy speech, Louis-Dreyfuss offered some amusing commentary about the current presidential election.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate. I think that Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics,” she said. “Our show started out as a political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary. So I certainly do promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it.”
