Julia Child’s French Home (And Kitchen) Up For Sale

Sotheby’s listing for the gorgeous French hideaway reads:

Julia Child’s French former holiday home is called “La Pitchoune” (meaning “the little one” in Provençal) and was often lovingly referred to as “La Peetch” by Julia Child, her husband Paul and their friends. It is located on a hillside of the small Provençal village of Plascassier, close to the town of Grasse and about a half-hour’s drive from the city of Cannes and the Côte d’Azur.

Check out the property’s immaculately equipped kitchen above, the world’s only still-existing Julia Child kitchen. Designed by her husband Paul, it was based on the kitchen in their home in Cambridge, Mass.

Julia and Paul visited the getaway yearly from the 1960’s to 1990’s, but as Paul’s health began to deteriorate in the early 90’s, decided to relinquish the property. In 1993, La Pitchoune became home to the culinary school Cooking with Friends in France run by American Kathie Alex, which Alex only closed for health reasons this year.

Child was the author of numerous best-selling cookbooks, including the celebrated Mastering The Art Of French Cooking, and hosted a number of cooking programs, most notable of which was The French Chef. She died of kidney failure at her retirement community home, Casa Dorinda, in Montecito, Calif., two days before her 92nd birthday.
