NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 3: Former U.S. President Donald Trump appears in the courtroom with his lawyers for his civil fraud trial at New York State Supreme Court on October 03, 2023 in New York City. Former President Trump may be forced to sell off his properties after Justice Arthur Engoron canceled his business certificates and ruled that he committed fraud for years while building his real estate empire after being sued by Attorney General Letitia James, who is seeking $250 million in damages. The trial will determine how much he and his companies will be penalized for the fraud. (Photo by Shannon Stapleton-Pool/Getty Images)
On Wednesday, a Manhattan judge fined Donald Trump $10,000 for violating an order against discussing court staff with the press.
Judge Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over New York Attorney General Letitia James’ case against Trump, which claims he fraudulently inflated his company’s value over the years in order to get bank loans, ruled that Trump made comments about his law clerk, Allison Greenfield, in violation of a gag order that he had issued previously.
While speaking to television cameras, Trump called Engoron partisan, saying that the judge has “a person who’s very partisan sitting alongside him. Perhaps even much more partisan than he is.”
The judge ordered Trump to take the stand to explain his actions.
The former president tried to deny allegations and claim he had been speaking about his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. His lawyers chimed in and said that he referred to Cohen by “much worse names.”
Engoron rejected this explanation.
“I find that the witness is not credible,” he said, adding that he is “very protective of [his] staff.”
This is the second time that the former president has been charged for making comments about the law clerk.
Last week, Trump was fined $5,000 for keeping a post about Greenfield on his campaign website in defiance of the judge’s order to remove all reference to his staff from online posts.
Trump recently fell off the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans, causing the former president to lash out at the publication.
