After Trump’s election in 2016, residents of the condo participated in a poll that found that over two-thirds of the 252 participating owners wanted to remove the name. Only 23% wanted to keep the name.
However, following the poll, a lawyer from the Trump Organization stated that a suit would be filed if the building tried to remove the name. A letter from the lawyer wrote that Trump would “commence appropriate legal proceedings to not only prevent such unauthorized action, but to also recover the significant amount of damages, costs and attorney’s fees.”
The letter also wrote, “Please be advised that [removing the sign] would constitute a flagrant and material breach of the License Agreement will have no choice but to commence appropriate legal proceedings.”
During the hearing, Judge Eileen Bransten stated that nowhere in the the board’s licensing agreement with the Trump Organization does it say that the building at 200 Riverside Blvd. is obligated to display Trump’s name.
The ruling made does not specifically change the name of the building instead of “Trump Place,” but allows the name to be subject to change if voted so by the condo association. Bransten has set the vote to be two-thirds majority for it to be changed.

This is not the first building to want to remove their association with the President’s organization. His name was pried off the hotel in Panama City, it was later renamed to Adelaide Hotel. Trump’s name was also removed from Trump SoHo, the condominium hotel.
