Judge Rules Jaime Spears & Bessemer Trust Will Remain Co-Conservators Of Britney Spears’ Estate

Los Angeles Superior Court judge Brenda Penny ruled on Thursday that Britney Spears‘ father, Jaime Spears, will continue to be a co-conservator over Spears’ estate along with wealth management and investment advisory firm, Bessemer Trust Company.

Spears filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court last August to remove Jaime as a conservator of her estate. The judge denied her request to remove her father, but in November, the judge allowed Bessemer Trust to be a co-conservator. This means that Jaime and Bessemer Trust have equal power in making financial and investment decisions with Spears’ estate. Spears has been under a conservatorship since 2008.

Spears’ lawyer, Samuel Ingham, argued it would benefit Spears for Jamie and Bessemer Trust to share power in managing Spears’ estate.

“An equal division of responsibility, in the hopes that they would sit down and figure out together the best way to handle this complex estate for the benefit of my client,” said Ingham.

However, he reiterated that her ultimate goal is to eventually remove her father as a conservator entirely.

“It’s no secret that my client does not want her father as co-conservator, but we recognize that removal is a separate issue,” Ingham said.

Jaime objected to the November decision, leading to more court hearings about the matter. Jaime claimed the co-conservatorship wrongly reduced his power over his daughter’s estate. Jaime’s lawyer, Vivian Thoreen, also asked that he retain power over her investments.

Thoreen said Jaime had “a fierce desire to protect [Britney] from those trying to take advantage of her.”

Both objections were rejected by the judge.

Jodi Montgomery, a licensed conservator, replaced Jaime as Spears’ personal conservator in 2019. Jaime stepped down from the role for medical reasons.

Bessemer and Jaime are expected to collaborate on a budget and investment plans for Spears’ estate. Additional hearings have been scheduled for March 17 and April 27.
