Judge Arthur Engoron, the New York judge overseeing Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial, has received hundreds of threatening messages that the court has deemed “serious and credible” since the former president began criticizing the court staff on social media.
Trump first started posting about Engoron and his law clerk on his platform, Truth Social, on October 3. Since then, threats against the judge have “increased exponentially” and are no longer considered “hypothetical or speculative,” according to court officer-captain Charles Hollon.
Trump’s comments have forced Engoron to impose a gag order prohibiting Trump from making statements about court staff in public.
Engoron has fined Trump twice for violating the gag order, with the former president now owing the court $15,000.
A New York appeals court temporarily lifted the gag order last week after Trump argued that it was a violation of his constitutional rights.
According to Hollon, the judge and his staff receive hundreds of phone calls, e-mails and voicemail messages a day, and security staff are “having to constantly reassess and evaluate what security protections to put in place to ensure the safety of the judge and those around him.”
In a court filing on Wednesday, a lawyer for the Court Administration for New York State asked an appeals court panel to reinstate the gag order.
Trump recently liked a comment from a fan saying there should be “a citizen’s arrest” of Engoron and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
