Josh Homme, frontman of Queens of the Stone Age, shares an old letter that late Anthony Bourdain wrote for his daughter, Camille Bourdain, that highlights his relationship with the rocker.
Homme once appeared on a episode of Parts Unknown and in the promotional video, Bourdain is seen interrupting Homme from performing by grabbing his guitar and smashing it against tree. Upon watching the video, a young Camille got upset with Bourdain for destroying her father’s guitar, which led to the chef writing her an apology letter.
“You saw me take Daddy’s guitar and smash it against a tree and I’m sure that was upsetting,” Bourdain wrote in the letter. He then explained that the promo was to pay ode to National Lampoon’s Animal House, which was way beyond her time and did not expect her to understand the reference.
He assured her that it was not really his guitar and they were only joking for the video, he also writes that he really enjoys being friends with Homme. “Know that that was in fact not really Daddy’s guitar, and that we were both just playing around,” he wrote. “Daddy would have been very angry were I to do such a thing – and as he is a large man, I would not still be here to write this letter. I like your Daddy very much. We are friends.”
The letter then continues on with Bourdain reminiscing a time where Homme stood up for him. He recalls a time they were at the bar Pappy & Harriet’s when a “superfan” was bothering Homme, which led to Homme having “guided him by the thorax” to a security guard. “I would have broken my beer glass across the man’s skull and then jabbed the remnants into his ****ing neck. That’s the kind of guy I am,” Bourdain wrote. “I had your Daddy’s back – just like he had mine.”
Bourdain then concludes the letter by calling her father “completely brilliant” and assured that Homme was never drunk while filming the show, despite the constant tequila throughout the episode. He also asks her what kind of food Homme cooks for her, telling her that he cooks his own daughter, Ariane, grilled cheese.
Following the chef’s suicide last month, Homme shared the letter on Twitter. “Tony, I miss you bad,” he wrote in the caption. To complete the circle, he then attributed his own letter to Bourdain’s daughter, “Ariane, this was your father.”
