The 36-year-old singer said he was walking his dog in lower Manhattan when he heard gunshots. Groban said he was roughly half a block from the attack, which occurred on the bike path near Chambers and West streets and Stuyvesant High School.

A 29-year-old man — who has now been identified as a Uzbekistan national who has been living in the U.S. since 2010 — rammed a Home Depot truck into the bike lane for about 15 blocks near the West Side Highway around 3 pm EST. Eight people were killed and over a dozen injured in what is being called the worst terror attack in New York since September 11, 2001. The attack happened very close to the World Trade Center.

“Oh my god I just heard gun shots and ran with my dog. Downtown. F—,” Groban tweeted. “I hope everyone’s ok. Was half a block from me, didn’t see it but heard 8-10 quick rounds fired off. Be safe with your kids out there.”

The singer also shared a brief video of emergency vehicles rushing to the scene of the attack and praised New York’s first responders.

Finally, Groban posted a message offering condolences to the victims’ families and friends:

Groban most recently appeared on Broadway in 2016 and 2017 as one of the main characters in the musical Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which was written by Dave Malloy and is based on a segment from Leo Tolstoy’s novel War and Peace.
