The New Mutants
Josh Boone, director of The Fault In Our Stars, is set to write and direct The New Mutants for Fox as an expansion of the X-Men franchise.
Boone will co-write the adaptation of Marvel’s The New Mutants comic-book series, released in the 1980s, with Knate Gwaltney, and Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner have signed on as producers. “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters,” sad Kinberg.
The New Mutants focused on a younger, new generation of genetically gifted individuals – a class of crime fighters in training. What set New Mutants apart from The X-Men was its diverse cast of main characters, featuring many international heroes.
First there’s Sam Guthrie, an American who discovered his mutant powers as a teenager and later grew into his superhero identity: Cannonball. Cannonball has the power to, essentially, turn himself into a human cannonball and propel himself forward with the force of a rocket. He can also control some forms of energy, creating explosions and protective shields. Danielle Moonstar, aka Mirage, a Native American young woman who could manifest people’s deepest fears and communicate with animals rounded out the Americans on the team.
The film is currently in early stages of development, and no details have been released on the script or what heroes will be heading to the big screen. Meanwhile, fans will get to see The X-Men on screen in X-Men: Apocalypse to be released on May 27, 2016.
