CBS is planning on joining the true-crime bandwagon started by the popularity of Netflix’s Making a Murderer and FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson with a new true-crime anthology. The first season will focus on the murder of JonBenét Ramsey, the unsolved case which centers around a six-year-old beauty-pageant contestant.
The Hollywood Reporter reports, “CBS is in final negotiations for an untitled unscripted anthology focusing on a different case each season.” The series is produced by Tom Forman (48 Hours, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) and plans on reuniting the case’s original investigators with new experts. The show could air as early as this fall which would coincide with the 20th anniversary of Ramsey’s strangling death.
Ramsey’s murder happened in Boulder, Colorado, 1997. She was found dead in her family home’s basement, eight hours after she was reported missing by her parents. The family was suspected to be involved in the murder. However DNA evidence from Ramsey’s clothing which was found later exonerated the family, and the case was reopened in 2009.
This news comes just days after CBS ordered their own true-crime show Law & Order: True Crime, whose first season will focus on the Melendez brothers. It seems that the true-crime trend has just begun.
