Jon Stewart
On Saturday, new HBO programming president Casey Bloys told reporters that they want to have Jon Stewarts‘ new project “up and running” by September or October.
The untitled short-form animated digital program was emphasized by Bloys as “a big endeavor” for Stewart.
“He’s establishing an animation studio because he wants to get material out multiple times a day,” Bloys said during a panel at the Television Critics Association press tour. “And the idea is it will be an animated parody of a cable news network, with kind of an Onion-like portal.”
Stewart wants to “comment in real-time during the day’s news events,” said Bloys, which is why the project is opting for an animated form.
Bloys said Stewart’s animation will be “simple” to allow for a quick turnaround, “probably” in the form of a half-hour program.
After leaving the his nearly two-decade hosting spot on The Daily Show last August, Stewart signed a four-year production deal with HBO in November.
HBO set an early 2016 target date for the project’s release. Since they were unable to meet that deadline, audiences have been left without Stewarts’ revered commentary on this year’s election.
Stewart did find his way back behind a desk, making a surprise appearance on Stephen Colbert‘s The Late Show.
