Jon Hamm, who stars as Don Draper on Mad Men, reportedly found himself in serious trouble in 1991 for actively participating in a hazing incident at his alma mater.
Hamm, 44, was named in the lawsuit filed by Mark Allen Sanders, a Sigma Nu pledge at the University of Texas. According to the lawsuit, Hamm, whacked Sanders with a paddle and subsequently lit his jeans on fire among other allegations.
“He rears back and hits me left-handed, and he hit me right over my right kidney, I mean square over it,” Sanders said in the lawsuit. “Good solid hit and that, that stood me right up.” Sanders also stated that Hamm participated in the abuse “till the very end” and became “mad, I mean really mad” after Sanders failed to answer questions to the actor’s satisfaction.
As a result of the lawsuit, Hamm and the other Sigma Nu members were criminally charged and the Texas chapter of the fraternity was disbanded. The lawsuit was dismissed in 1993, but Hamm was still required to serve probation and ultimately dropped out of the university at 20.
Hamm has not yet commented on the college incident.
Mad Men, which is currently in its final season, airs Sundays on AMC at 10/9c.
