On Saturday, a joint memorial service was held to pay tribute to actress Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds.
Hundreds gathered in L.A. at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park-Hollywood Hills’ Hall of Liberty. Family, friends and fans attended the service, which was public.
“These were my girls,” Todd Fisher, who organized the public memorial with his wife, told those who had gathered to honor the memory of his famous sister and mother.
“This entire thing I’m calling a show, not a memorial, because my mother… liked shows and parties,” he said. “So this show was really designed for you to be in our living room, as if we were all a big family, celebrating two amazing women.”
The memorial began with a military color guard for the Singin’ in the Rain star, who had performed for the troops over the years, even making several trips to those serving in Korea in the 1950s.
The service continued with dance routines, a speech from Dan Aykroyd and an appearance from Star Wars droid R2-D2. One emotional segment featured a clip of Billie Lourd singing onstage with her mother for the first time in Las Vegas. For the 1,200 people who managed to get a seat inside the hall, the ceremony was a part of Hollywood history.
Close friends and family held a private funeral back in January. Fisher said that a public service was in keeping with how both women embraced the people who supported and adored them.
