Singer Johnny Mathis was out of town for a concert when a fire ravaged his Los Angeles home, taking nearly all of his belongings with it.
Mathis’ Hollywood Hills mansion became engulfed in flames Monday night, reported KTLA. Mathis learned of the blaze when he landed that night in Los Angeles following a show in Cleveland.
As of yet, it’s not certain what started the fire. One Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said it likely started outside, while another said that the department believed it originated in a room holding aquarium equipment.
“Someone said that there was a fire at the house. I was thinking a little fire,” Mathis told KTLA-TV after seeing the extent of the damage. “It’s the only house I’ve ever had. There’s nothing left.”
“I’m OK, nobody got hurt — that’s always important,” Mathis added. “We can always replace things.”
Fortunately for Mathis, some of his more irreplaceable things were salvaged from the flames because of the quick thinking of some of his neighbors.
“Due to the fact the neighbors had said something, we immediately got all his trophies and some of his memorabilia that was irreplaceable,” Los Angeles Fire Department Battalion Chief Dean Zipperman told the TV station.
