Johnny Manziel Wins Heisman Trophy

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, 20, won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday, becoming the first ever freshman to receive the honor and only the second A&M player to win since John David Crow in 1957.

Known to fans as “Johnny Football,” Manziel received 474 of a possible 928 first-place votes and a total of 2,029 points. He finished ahead of Manti Te’o, 21, the much-heralded Notre Dame linebacker (321 first-place votes, 1,706 points) and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, 23 (60, 894). “I have been dreaming about this since I was a kid, running around the backyard pretending I was Doug Flutie, throwing Hail Marys to my dad," Manziel said as he accepted the award. “I wish my whole team could be up here with me.”

Manziel arrived on the national stage in mid-November, by going into the stadium of the then #1 ranked Alabama and leading his team to an upset of the Crimson Tide 29-24. Manziel threw for 253 yards and rushed for another 92. On the season, Manziel accounted for 4,600 yards of total offense (3,419 throwing, 1,181 running), breaking the Southeastern Conference (SEC) record set by Cam Newton in 2010. Manziel also became only the fifth player ever in the history of college football to throw for 3000 yards and to run for 1000 yards.

More importantly, the freshman wunderkind led his team to a 10-2 in their first season as a member of the tough SEC. Their next game is the Cotton Bowl against #11 ranked Oklahoma on Jan. 4 in Arlington, Tex.
