Johnny Depp Jokes About Assassinating Donald Trump At Glastonbury

Actor Johnny Depp appeared to joke about assassinating President Donald Trump while speaking to crowd at the Glastonbury music and arts festival in the south of England on Thursday.

While giving the opening remarks to a screening of his 2004 film The Libertine, Depp first asked the audience, “Can you bring Trump here?”

After the crowd booed, Depp clarified, “You misunderstand completely. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” The crowd then cheered.

“I want to clarify: I am not an actor. I lie for a living. However, it’s been a while and maybe it’s time,” Depp said.

Knowing that he would certainly receive backlash for his remarks, Depp concluded, “By the way, this is going to be in the press and it’ll be horrible. It’s just a question, I’m not insinuating anything.”

Depp was most likely making reference to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth, an actor.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor joins an increasingly growing list of entertainers who have found themselves in hot water for insinuating violence against the 45th president.

Several weeks ago, comedian Kathy Griffin was fired from her New Year’s Eve gig with CNN after a photo of her holding a fake decapitated Trump head was circulated. After seeing the picture, Trump tweeted that his 11-year-old son, Barron Trump, was “having a hard time” with the image. Griffith apologized, noting that she went “too far.”

The Public Theatre in New York also lost support from many of their sponsors after putting on a production of “Julius Caesar” in which the Roman leader resembled Trump – he had blond hair and a long, red tie. Caesar is murdered towards the end of the play and some suggested that this depiction suggested violence against the President.

In addition, Madonna made headlines in January after joking about blowing up the White House. Speaking on the National Mall during the Women’s March, the day after Trump’s inauguration, the singer said that she had “thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House.” Trump tweeted about her comments as well, saying that she is a “disgrace” to her cause and country.

The President has yet to comment on Depp’s remarks.
