Johnny Depp, who memorably impersonated Donald Trump in a Funny or Die Video, believes that the real estate mogul-turned-presidential candidate is nothing but a brat.
Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump has gone from insulting one group of people to another with his inflammatory rhetoric, shrugging off critics by claiming an oversensitivity to political correctness. Depp channeled Trump’s bombastic and unapologetic nature in his surprise turn as the GOP frontrunner.
“It’s not just about being a rich kid — I approached Donald Trump as what you kind of see in him when you really watch him,” Depp said during a talk at Arizona State University Saturday. “There’s something creative about him in a sense of bullydom.”
Depp added, “But what he is, I believe, is a brat.”
Depp then segued into an impersonation of Trump: “Everything is mine. Even if I don’t own it. I’m going to build a wall. A fabulous wall. And all of my billions are not going to pay for it… Mexico’s gonna pay for it.”
The Funny or Die video titled Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal: The Movie was meant to be a TV movie adaptation of Trump’s 1987 autobiography of the same name. Ron Howard explains in the beginning of the faux movie that it was meant to air in 1988, but was booted from the TV lineup by Monday Night Football. Trump, the writer, director and star, according to the myth, then banned his movie from ever showing.
Funny or Die’s editor in chief Owen Burke called Depp’s performance in the video “absolutely bananas” in an interview with The New York Times. Burke added, “Because we tend to move so fast, we’re usually just slapping wigs on people, but Johnny brought, like, a whole team of professionals to help him get into character. Or at least style his hair.”
