Johnny Depp, 48, is not often one to find himself in the midst of a scandal, until now. Religious groups are expressing outrage over the release of a new song the Pirates of the Caribbean actor recorded with the British indie band, Babybird.
The song, "Jesus Stag Night Club," portrays a Jesus lookalike as a reckless party animal. The lyrics, sung by Depp, include the lines "I can't remember where I was last night / Think I was hanging naked off a church spire / Tied by my ankles to a weather vane / Felt like I was Jesus on fire."
Lee Douglas, a spokesperson for the Christian Coalition, is calling for the "blasphemous" tune to be pulled from British radio, in effect destroying its chances to vie for a chart-topping spot. "I'm sure he thinks he's being very funny but he's simply a disgrace," Douglas said of Depp, reports the British newspaper The Daily Star. "One day, Johnny Depp and his cronies will face the judgment of our Lord and they will burn in hell for this filth," he said.
A spokesperson for the Focus on the Family organization also publically denounced the song, and Depp. "We are sickened my Mr. Depp's behavior," they said. "Why did he need to record this song?"
Though Depp has not responded to the attacks, Stephen Jones, the band's lead singer, chimed in on Twitter. "Christians go to heaven. Sinners go to hell. This is their message of peace. Oh yes and gays can f**k off too. It's a beautiful world, Jesus."
This is not the first time Depp has recorded with Babybird. He also played guitar on their song, "Unloveable," last year, and directed its music video, according to ABC News.
