John Zawahri Identified As Santa Monica Shooter, 6 Dead From Rampage
John Zawahri has been identified as the man who went on the shooting rampage in Santa Monica, Calif. on Friday that has left six people dead, reported USA Today.
Zawahri allegedly began at his father’s house, where he shot both his father Samir Zawahri, 55, and his brother Chris Zawahri, 25, dead before setting the house on fire. He then proceeded to carjack a vehicle before firing at a Ford Explorer driven by Carlos Navarro Franco, who was killed in the gunfire. He then crashed into a wall, leaving his daughter Marcel Franco, who was in the passenger seat, in critical condition. She died on Sunday.
Weilding a semiautomatic rifle, Zawahri then proceeded to enter Santa Monica College, where he fatally shot a woman outside of the library. Her name has not yet been released. Zawahri was ultimately shot dead by police within the Santa Monica College library.
Zawahri was known to have an affinity for firearms, according to a friend. “[Zawahri had] a fascination with guns. We were all worried about it. … Everyone is wondering where he got the money for the weapons," the friend told the Los Angeles Times. Furthermore, the divorce between Zawahri’s parents is thought to have been a possible motive for the shooting spree. His mother reportedly requested a restraining order against his father in 1998, and Zawahri had apparently attested to his father’s abuse during the divorce proceedings.
Dressed as a SWAT officer in full-on Kevlar, Zawahri had been carrying a duffle bag with 1,300 rounds of ammunition when he was taken out by law enforcement.
