John Mellencamp, like many Americans tired of seeing preventable gun massacres happening constantly, penned a simple but damning statement on social media yesterday.
“Only in America, and I mean only, in America, can 21 people be murdered and a week later be buried and forgotten, with a flimsy little thumbnail, a vague notion of some sort of gun control law laying on the senators’ desks,” Mellencamp passionately wrote.
The singer/songwriter summed up what many are thinking right now, and also added “politicians don’t give a f––k about you, they don’t give a f––k about me, and they don’t give a f––k about our children.”
He also gloomily said that “it will be just a short time before this happens again,” which is absolutely likely if more sweeping changes to gun laws are not implemented.
A bipartisan-backed bill was passed by the U.S. House and Senate this week, which would enact several useful gun control policies, including making more gun sellers register as Federally Licensed Firearms Dealers, developing the National background check system for people ages 18-21 looking to buy a gun, and not allowing people who have been convicted with domestic violence charges to own a gun while still in a relationship with the victims.
While this bill is encouraging, the idea of more sweeping bans on assault weapons seems to be a non-starter in these gun control talks.
