John Mellencamp, 71, recently opened up about his 10-year relationship with Meg Ryan, 61, almost four years after their split.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Mellencamp recalled the time he and Ryan had just started dating.

Meg Ryan had just come out of her shell, I had just come out of my shell,” he began.

The singer-songwriter then went on to explain that because he and the When Harry Met Sally actress had assistants to perform mundane tasks done for them, they “didn’t know how to do anything” and decided to try and change that.

“I’ve never checked out of a hotel by myself,” he shared. “Her and I went to a grocery store, and they wanted our credit card, and we looked at each other and said, ‘Here it is,’ and they said, ‘No, you’ve got to put it in this thing,’ and we went, ‘Then what happens?'”

“We laughed at how stupid we are, so hard we cried,” the 71-year-old reminisced. “I think she’s learned how to do everything, and I’ve learned how to do nothing.”

The “Hurts So Good” singer also confessed to being a “sh—y boyfriend” even though he loved her, and in a past interview with Howard Stern, he said, “I think it’s because I’m a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I’m moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that’s me.”

Mellencamp is currently on his Live and In Person Tour until the end of June. His new album, Orpheus Descending, is out on June 16.
