John Legend To Perform At Theater Named In His Honor At Old High School

Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter John Legend will perform at Springfield North High School at the dedication ceremony of the recently renovated theater named for him.

JOHN LEGEND TO PERFORM AT THEATER NAMED FOR HIM

Legend, an alum of Springfield North HS, contributed $500,000 to the project. The John Legend Theater at the Springfield Center of Innovation: The Dome seats up to 680 people and cost $2.5 million to build.

“John was really a catalyst to get something that we all wanted to do finally done,” says Kim Fish, a Communications and Special Projects Consultant. Other donors included Speedway, the Turner Foundation, Security National Bank and the Springfield Foundation.

The Dome will also house several educational programs, including the Global Impact STEM Academy, Clark State Community College laboratories and the Greater Springfield CareerConnectED Center, which encourages students to explore various crafts, from creative arts to welding.

The entire high school has been under renovation for years following an $11.3 million Ohio Straight-A grant. According to Fish, the new theater has been in the works since 2006.

Legend’s performance will take place Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. following the ribbon cutting. Attendees will be on a first-come, first-serve basis for 200 wristbands given to teachers, students and community members.

In addition to Legend’s, several other performances have been booked for the space, though none quite as famous. The Springfield Arts Council’s youth Ambassadors “Alice in Wonderland,” a film festival, and the Ukulele Club will be among the top-billed.
