John Cena, the reigning WWE champion, lost to Alberto Del Rio Sunday at the WWE United States Championship event Hell in a Cell Sunday night.
Cena didn’t know who he was going to face off against when he arrived for the fight. He was surprised when Zeb Colter announced Del Rio, who was returning to the ring following a long hiatus.
After the match commenced, Del Rio showed that he still had it, getting the upperhand early on. He appeared to be on the cusp of defeating Cena a number of times before landing a backstabber and a side kick that officially served Cena his loss.
With the win, Del Rio became the new WWE United States Champion. He also became the first man to win the United Stats Championship during Cena’s open challenge.
Cena, the biggest name in the WWE, is said to be looking forward to some time off following Sunday’s bout. He’s not signed on for any WWE TV and live events throughout early December, meaning he is out of the November European tour. However, he is expected to be back in the ring for the post-Christmas WWE live events.
