Joey Chestnut proposed to his girlfriend Neslie Ricasa prior to scarfing down 61 hot dogs to win his eighth consecutive Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Chestnut, 30, won the popular eating contest against his competitive eating rival Matt Stonie, who put the pressure on the returning champion. As the 10-minute contest was coming to a close, Stonie and Chestnut were neck-and-neck. However, the veteran pulled through in the end to best his competition by five hotdogs – 61 to 56.
"I miss competing against him,” Chestnut, who has lost to Stonie in other events told TMZ. “He's a great competitor."
Before Chestnut began stuffing hot dogs into his mouth, he had something more important to take care of. Prior to winning what would be his eighth mustard belt in a row, Chestnut got down on one knee and asked Ricassa if she would marry him. Leaning into the microphone, she gladly accepted his marriage proposal.
On the women's wide, Miki Sudo, 28, unseated reigning champion Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas, by eating 34 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
