Joe Biden Consoles Meghan McCain About Father’s Cancer Diagnosis On ‘The View’

Former Vice President Joe Biden consoled Meghan McCain on The View.

McCain got emotional while discussing her father John McCain‘s brain cancer diagnosis. The senator was diagnosed earlier this year with the same type of cancer that caused Biden’s son’s death in 2015. Biden was on the show to promote his new memoir, Promise Me, Dad, which focuses on his son’s life as he served as Delaware’s attorney general.

“I couldn’t get through your book, I tried,” McCain said, tearing up. “I think about Beau [Biden] almost every day, and I was told that this doesn’t get easier.” Then Biden moved from his end of the table to sit by McCain and take her hand. He spoke about his friendship with and admiration for her father, whom he first met when they were young.

“One of the things that gave Beau courage…was John,” Biden said. “Your dad took care of my Beau, became friends with Beau. Beau talked about your dad’s courage. Not about illness, but about his courage.”

Since leaving office, Biden has devoted much of his time to helping cancer research. He believes there have been many medical breakthroughs that should give “hope” to anyone facing this diagnosis. “There’s a lot of hope there,” Biden added. “And if anybody can make it, [it’s] your dad.”

In July, Biden reached out to John McCain on Twitter to offer his support. “John and I have been friends for 40 years,” he wrote. “He’s gotten through so much difficulty with so much grace. He is strong – and he will beat this.”

“Thank you @JoeBiden & the entire Biden family for serving as an example & source of strength for my own family,” McCain said on Wednesday after his daughter and Biden appeared on The View.
