Ricky Gervais wasn’t alone in criticising the star-studded audience at the Golden Globes.
Joaquin Phoenix, winner of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his role as Arthur Fleck in Joker, brought up Hollywood hypocrisy over climate change while dropping F-bombs throughout the speech.

When he saw that he won, Phoenix stood up from his seat with open eyes and scanned the audience as he walked towards the stage. With a deep sigh, he started his speech. “First, I’d like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press, um, for recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change. It’s a very bold move making tonight plant-based, and it really sends a powerful message,” said Phoenix. This is the first time the awards banquet had been full-vegan in an attempt to spread environmental awareness and sustainability, however, most of the stars did not consume the meal.
Phoenix’s mood changed. “We all know there’s no fucking award,’ he said. Before the crowd could read his lips, the camera cut to Jonathan Pryce, who was not impressed. Phoenix played with his wristband before referring to the Golden Globes as “this thing to sell advertisements for TV shows.”
He seemed to play with harsh honesty as he transitioned to admire his fellow nominees. “I know people say this but I really do feel honored to be mentioned with you. Some of you I reached out to personally. Some I’m still a little too intimidated by, even though we share the same agent. Hi, Christian [Bale],” said Phoenix awkwardly.
He then said “Uh, you’re not here.”
Phoenix slammed the industry in his speech. “Contrary to popular belief, I don’t want to rock the boat, but the boat needs to be fucking rocked” he said.
“We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards sometimes, or back,” said Phoenix, “please, and try to do better, I hope you will too.”
This award was Phoenix’s second Golden Globe win after winning his first award in 2006 for his depiction of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.
