Joan Rivers Moved Out Of Intensive Care; Health Status Uncertain

Joan Rivers has been moved from the intensive care unit at Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Hospital, though it’s unknown whether or not her condition has improved.

Joan Rivers Health Update

Melissa Rivers provided a vague update on her 81-year-old mother’s status, revealing that she’d been moved into a private room but nothing about her condition other than that she’s “being kept comfortable.”

"My mother has been moved out of intensive care and into a private room where she is being kept comfortable,” Melissa said in a statement Wednesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Thank you for your continued support."

It is unknown if Rivers remains on life support, which she has been on since she was put into a medically induced coma last Thursday after she stopped breathing during an outpatient throat surgery. As of Tuesday, she was still on life support at the hospital, per her daughter’s update, which also included a message of thanks to those keeping the comedian and her family in their thoughts and prayers.

"On behalf of my mother and our family, we are extremely grateful for all the love and support we've received. At this time, she does remain on life support," Melissa said in the statement. "I know my mother would be overwhelmed by the continued outpouring of kindness, and I want to thank everyone for keeping us in their prayers."

Prior to Melissa’s statement, it had been reported that doctors would begin to wake Rivers up from the coma so that they would be able to determine how much damage had been done to her brain during the time in which it was deprived of oxygen. It was believed that the Fashion Police host may wake up to find her motor skills impaired.

“The waking-up process has begun and will take until Tuesday,” a source close to the family said to the New York Daily News. “There is real concern that the part of the brain that controls motor skills may have been compromised, leaving her as either a vegetable or in a wheelchair.”

While Rivers' condition remains up in the air, E! has decided to halt filming on Fashion Police for the next two weeks. "We will not be producing a Fashion Police this week or next as we await Joan and Melissa's return in front and behind the camera,” a network spokesperson said. In lieu of the new episodes, the network will air a pair of New York Fashion Week specials.
