One Direction fans across the globe were left devastated when Zayn Malik unexpectedly exited the teen sensation quintet back in March, but Jimmy Kimmel is attempting to fill the void his departure left by adding a new member to the lineup.

“We have some very exciting news for One Direction fans tonight. We are going to do something no band has ever done before. We are going to welcome a new member to the One Direction family,” the host told an excited crowd.

“That new member is this potato. This is a Russet potato raised in a field among many others. We bought it at Ralph’s. It cost 58 cents. It’s a very ordinary, some might say humble, vegetable, but what this potato does not know is it is about to become the most famous potato in the world,” he announced. “Members of the paparazzi will try to take pictures of it. Young girls will shriek when they see it. By this time tomorrow, this potato…might even be dating Ariana Grande.”

You read that right, Malik’s replacement and new One Direction member is a potato. News of the addition to the lineup quickly went viral with #1Dpotato trending on social media and pics of the vegetable getting cozy with a number of big name celebs causing quite a stir.

The potato kept fans up to date via its Twitter account.
