Former President Jimmy Carter has revealed that he has cancer that has been found in his liver and other parts of his body.
Carter, 90, revealed his cancer diagnosis in a statement on Wednesday, explaining that he’ll have to take time off to receive treatment.
“Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body,” Carter said in the statement released by the Carter Center. “I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare.”
“A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week,” the statement added.
On Aug. 3, Carter announced that he had undergone surgery to remove a small mass from his liver. At the time, Mr. Carter’s spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said that “the prognosis is excellent for a full recovery.”
Mr. Carter was the 39th president of the United States, and is the second-oldest surviving POTUS. Since leaving the White House in 1981 after one term in office, Carter has continued in public service by promoting healthcare and global democracy. He’s also authored more than 20 books, including his latest, A Full Life: Reflections at 90, for which he recently wrapped up a tour.
