Jim Irsay, the Indianapolis Colts owner, was arrested early Monday monring and was subsequently charged with a DWI and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Irsay, 54, was booked Monday at 3:07 a.m. after his arrest in Carmel, Ind., according to the Hamilton County Jail. His bail was set at $22,500. He'd been stopped by police, who noticed the driver operating his vehicle particularly slowly, stopping in the middle of a road and neglecting to use his blinker. Once they had Irsay pulled over, they subjected him to field sobriety tests.

"During the course of the investigation, Irsay subsequently failed several roadside field sobriety tests," Lt. Joe Bickel of the Carmel police department said in a statement.

"Multiple prescription drugs were discovered in pill bottles," police added. "These Schedule IV prescription drugs were not associated with any prescription bottles found in the vehicle."

Colts Release Statement Regarding Irsay

In their initial and follow-up statements, the Colts have remained supportive of Irsay, and have stated their intention to wait before offering a more comprehensive comment on Irsay and his position with the NFL franchise.

“We are gathering information at this time regarding last night's incident involving Jim Irsay,” started the Colts' first statement. “The team will issue additional statements when the facts are sorted and we are aware of the next steps to this process. Many fans have reached out to express their concern and we appreciate their support.”

"The club continues to fully support Mr. Irsay but must refrain from commenting further at least until formal charges have been filed,” the franchise later added. “A hearing is tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday, March 26."

Irsay took over as owner of the Colts from his father, Robert Irsay, in 1997. Like his father, Irsay has long struggled with drug and alcohol abuse – something he’s spoken about openly in the past. Irsay has admitted that he sought treatment at least once for a prescription pill addition. According to an Indianapolis TV station, the franchise owner overdosed on painkillers three times in the early 2000s, reported Sporting News.

Indy Star columnist Bob Kravitz has been tweeting about the incident, intimating that it was only a matter of time before Irsay got busted.

Irsay, since his release on Monday, has also gone on Twitter, sharing his thanks to all those showing him support in light of his arrest.

In addition to possibly facing punishment from the Colts, Irsay also stands to face repercussions from the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy.
