Jessica Chastain is calling for change in a tearful video following a heated exchange with a fan on Twitter.
Chastain, 40, posted an emotional video where she spoke about the fragile state that our country is in, and said she hopes for “transformative social change.” She held back tears as she said, “I’m making a video because my heart is very heavy,” she started. “I’ve learned so much the past few days about the trauma many people are experiencing in our country. I’ve had the opportunity to listen, more than to speak, and it’s really hard for me to express my feelings, my thoughts, in 140 characters.”
It’s unclear what exactly prompted the video, but the actress had received some backlash recently for a tweet where she expressed her preference for non-violent protest.
In response, another user posted a different Martin Luther King, Jr. quote, which condemns the “white moderate.” Chastain responded to the man, saying, “If the color of my skin is going to cause you to generalize, perhaps you shd look back over whether or not I’ve been silent to injustice.”
But the user kept pushing, causing Chastain to post two more tweets to defend herself. “Nonviolent protest has NOTHING to do with self defence. Please look at the last article I posed. Data shows that nonviolence works better… Im not speaking about nonviolence in the place of self defence. If a Nazi tried to hurt you, I would fight alongside to protect you.”
“I wanted you guys to know that I hear you,” she continued in the video. “I wanted you to know that I’m committed to creating transformative social change, that I’m committed to dismantling systems of oppression. I share in the sadness of what is happening in the country. I hear you. You may never have met me, but I love you,” she concluded.
