Jessica Alba showed off a new, vampy style with the debut of her new edgy bob haircut at a Stand Up to Cancer event Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Alba, who has recently been favoring the long, soft look, jumped on the bob trend with her longer, jagged edged haircut. Alba’s hair is still long to most standards, coming down to just above her shoulders. For the Stand Up to Cancer event, Alba finished the look with a pretty white lace dress simple lined eye and deep, wine colored lipstick.

Celebrity hair stylist Jen Atkin opened up about the coif and revealed that Alba specifically asked for a fearless new hairstyle.

“Jessica’s style is always evolving, and she isn’t afraid of a little change. She was ready for something new and fresh,” Atkin told Us Weekly.

Atkin, who calls the cut the “fashion bob,” credits the cut’s versatility for its appeal, noting that Alba, or any girl with a similar cut, can use the freedom of the bob to create almost any look on any given day, something impossible to do with a shorter look. For example, Atkin points out that Alba went for the textured look that evening with loose waves, but could easily use other hair products to get a sleeker, more polished look.

For those wanting to follow in Alba’s footsteps and venture into bob territory, Atkin recommends bringing pictures to the salon and stresses the necessity of longer layers instead of the more traditional bob short layers.

“I find that a lot of stylists can get a little carried away with layers when it comes to cutting a bob, so it’s crucial to tell your stylist to keep the layers long, which is what allows for the versatility of this particular cut,” Atkin says.

Alba isn’t Atkin’s only celebrity client. As advertised on her Instagram account, Atkin has also acted as hair guru to Kim Kardashian and Jenna Dewan Tatum, among others.

Alba is currently staring on IFC’s comedy miniseries The Spoils of Babylon, airing Thursdays at 10 p.m. on IFC.
