Fox News host Jesse Watters fell for a fake photo of a shark swimming in the floods of Houston following Hurricane Harvey.
During a live news broadcast, Watters commented on the strange occurrences that have cropped up in Houston. “I’ve seen some amazing things out there just looking at television over the weekend,” he began, before listing off, “Alligators on people’s back door steps, I saw a shark on a highway swimming in the water, I saw a hawk sitting in someone’s taxi cab…”
The thing is that the shark photograph circling the news and internet had been doctored. He agreed with co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle that the aftermath was like Sharknado. The photo, originally posted on Twitter, has since been debunked. “Guys, stop re-tweeting this photo. It’s a fake. It’s been posted every time there is a flood, anywhere. #harvey #shark #HoustonFloods,” wrote one user.
It appears that the Fox News team fell for this ‘fake news’ and reported on it, agreeing with Donald Trump that parts of this flood seem “Biblical.” “There’s some really weird Biblical things that are going on down there in Houston. I can’t imagine how I would be experiencing that as a guy from the Northeast, but I think Texas has it figured out,” Watters continued in the segment.
Watters has since been informed of his faux pas and has apologized. “Yesterday, I made a comment about a shark in the floodwaters in Texas. I sincerely apologize if I caused concern or alarm to anyone,” he tweeted out. “The folks there and beyond are suffering unimaginable hardships. My heart goes out to them.”
