Jerry Sandusky laughed and continued to deny allegations that he sexually assaulted young men at Penn State University during an interview conducted by journalist and documentary filmmaker John Ziegler. Clips from the interview were played on the Today show as Matt Lauer spoke with Ziegler about his project.
“I don’t understand how anybody would have walked into that locker room from where he was and heard sounds associated that was sex going on like he said that could’ve been. I mean, that would have been the last thing I would have thought about,” Sandusky laughed about the testimony of former Penn State grad assistant Mike McQueery. “I would have thought maybe fooling around or something like that.
Ziegler recorded over three hours of interview time with Sandusky, who is currently serving a 30-60 year prison term. Ziegler’s final product is the documentary Framing Paterno, which he hopes will serve to clear the late football coach’s name. Joe Paterno died of lung cancer in 2012, shortly after he was forced to resign in light of the Sandusky scandal.
In mocking the testimony made by McQueery, Sandusky is casting doubt on one of the most damning and memorable parts of the trial. Not only was McQueery’s testimony damaging for Sandusky, but also for Paterno – who allegedly was informed about this particular run-in. Ziegler believes that accounts like this from Sandusky will help to exonerate Paterno. Unfortunately for Ziegler, the Paterno family is not interested in his attempts to gain insight into the child abuse scandal through interviews with Sandusky.
“The Paterno family would prefer to remain silent on this matter, but they feel it is important to make it clear that they had no role in obtaining or releasing this recording,” read a statement from family attorney Wick Sollers. “Moreover, they believe that any attempt to use this recording as a defense of Joe Paterno is misguided and inappropriate.”
