Jermain Taylor, the former middleweight boxing champion, is out on $25,000 bail after an altercation at his Little Rock, Ark., home where he allegedly shot his cousin, Tyrone Hinton. The usually soft-spoken athlete has been charged with domestic battery and aggravated assault—charges he has pled not guilty to. Little Rock officers reported that Taylor was arrested quietly and without incident.
The altercation had taken place between Taylor, Hinton and another man, who has remained unidentified. Police confirmed that while Hinton remains in serious condition, the third man was not harmed in any way. What led to the altercation has not been released.
Taylor is not only a former middleweight champion, but on Olympic competitor as well. In 2000, Taylor represented the United States in the Olympics in Sydney where he won a bronze medal in boxing. He made his professional debut the next year, winning his first 25 bouts, including fights against former champions Raul Marquez and William Joppy before defeating Bernard Hopkins for the middleweight championship.
In early 2010, the then-32 year old Taylor announced he was taking a break from boxing that many considered his way of quietly retiring. Rumors of this fluttered until he return was announced over a year later.
It was largely suggested that Taylor took this break because of the knockout he received during the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament in his bout against Arthur Abraham, making for the third time in his professional career that he suffered a knockout. He was diagnosed with a severe concussion and had difficulties with his short term memory and could not remember the details of his fight with Abraham.
Taylor returned 26 months later to face Jessie Nicklow where he won by TKO in the eighth round.
