Popular trivia game show Jeopardy! is on hiatus after host Alex Trebek underwent an unexpected brain surgery in December.
The show posted a video to its website on Thursday about the incident. Trebek, 77, was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Dec. 15 after complications from a fall he took in October, when he hit his head. He was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma and underwent surgery the following day to remove any blood clots from his brain.
Trebek appeared in a brief video to address the situation and speak to his fans. “Surgery was performed, after two days in the hospital I came home to start recovery,” he said. “The prognosis is excellent and I expect to be back in the studio taping more Jeopardy! programs very, very soon. And I want to thank all of you for your concern.”
Fortunately, the hiatus won’t affect the show’s schedule too much. Episodes of Jeopardy! are filmed months in advance of when they air, so there are plenty of completed episodes still due out. The only significant change is that the College Championship, which usually airs in April, will be postponed this year.
Trebek has been the host of Jeopardy! since 1984, and appears to have every intention to continue his hosting duties once he has fully recovered.
