Jennifer Lopez Embraces Puerto Rican Flag With Daughter Emme Lopez During Super Bowl Halftime Show

At last night’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, there might have been more than just the usual singing and dancing – some are interpreting Jennifer Lopez‘s performance as a dig at President Donald Trump. The Halftime Show, which was headlined by the 50-year-old Lopez along with fellow Latina pop star Shakira, drew praise from social media, especially for the subtly political moments in Lopez’s performance.

About 12 minutes into the halftime show, Emme Lopez, the daughter of the singer, came on stage with a children’s choir to sing a ballad rendition of J. Lo’s hit, “Let’s Get Loud.” The child singers were dressed in white, emblazoned with a glittery U.S. flag. Some of the child performers sat in cage-like structures, which some Twitter users were quick to note were reminiscent of the Trump administration policy of child detention at the U.S-Mexico border.

Soon after, J. Lo launched into a short rendition of Bruce Springsteen‘s “Born in the U.S.A.” The “Jenny from the Block” singer wore a reversible cape. She began the song with the cape showing a pattern of the U.S. flag, but when Emme sand the line “Born in the U.S.A.,” J. Lo revealed the other side of the cape – a Puerto Rican flag. Although commonly mistaken for being a separate country, Puerto Rico is a United States territory, and those living on the Caribbean island are American citizens. J. Lo, whose parents are of Puerto Rican descent, has been vocal in the past about her support for the island territory. “We just want to be treated equally. We’re Americans,” said the singer in an interview with ABC News.
