Jennifer Lawrence has announced a year-long hiatus from acting join forced with an organization to “fix our democracy.”
The Academy Award-winning actress, 27, told Entertainment Tonight of her plans while promoting her current film Red Sparrow. “I’m going to take the next year off. I’m going to be working with this organization I’m a part of: Represent.Us. It’s just trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level.” Lawrence also made it clear that her activism is not partisan. “It’s just anti-corruption and stuff trying to pass state-by-state laws that can help prevent corruption, fix our democracy. And then I don’t know what I’m doing next.”
Represent.Us is a nonprofit organization that works to bring people together to end the vast political polarization in this country. According to the mission statement, the organization “brings together conservatives, progressives, and everyone in between to pass powerful anti-corruption laws that stop political bribery, end secret money, and fix our broken elections.”
Lawrence has shown interest in political activism during her career, and often attacks President Donald Trump. In 2015, she told Entertainment Weekly that if Trump were elected, “it will be the end of the world.” Last year, she lamented the fact that the president doesn’t believe in climate change, especially after the devastating storms that hit Texas and Florida.
“It’s scary to know, it’s been proven through science, that climate change is due to human activity,” she said on the Mother! press tour. “And we continue to ignore it, and the only voice we have is through voting.”
Lawrence’s reps, however, told Entertainment Weekly that the actress isn’t exactly taking a year off. She will be participating in political activism with Represent.Us, but will return to work once one of several projects that are currently in development is ready to film. According to IMDb, she is involved in seven projects that are in development at this time, including an untitled film with Amy Schumer, Ron Howard‘s biopic Zelda and Adam McKay‘s Bad Blood.
