On the Absolutely Not podcast, Jennifer Lawrence said she voted for John McCain over Barack Obama in the past and always voted Republican until Donald Trump‘s election.
The actress, 30, told host Heather McMahan, “I grew up Republican. My first time voting, I voted for John McCain. I was a little Republican.” She added that she is still grateful for her Republican upbringing because it enabled her to see the benefits of the party’s fiscal policies, while also recognizing Republicans’ social policies don’t align with her own views.
“When Donald Trump got elected, that just changed everything,” Lawrence said. “This is an impeached president who’s broken many laws and refused to condemn white supremacy and it feels there’s been a line drawn in the sand.”
Lawrence said she couldn’t imagine supporting a party that doesn’t champion basic rights for women and gay people. She explained, “I don’t want to stay quiet about that stuff.”
Lawrence also reminisced on the years Obama was in office, back when “you would go days without thinking about the president.”
The actress has made her stance in the current election very clear. Earlier this month, Lawrence endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and she stated, “If Donald Trump is president of the United States, it will be the end of the world. And he’s also the best thing to happen to the Democrats ever.”
“I would consider this upcoming election the most consequential of our lifetime.”
