Jennifer Aniston has opened up about her failed attempts at getting pregnant. The 53-year-old said that throughout her thirties and forties she tried a variety of things in her fertility journey, including in-vitro fertilization.

IVF is a procedure in which eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilized in a controlled lab setting before being transferred into a uterus. The success rate of IVF decreases as a woman gets older.

“I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it,” she told Allure. “I was throwing everything at it. I would’ve given anything if someone had said to me, ‘freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.’ You just don’t think it.”

The actress said the years she tried for pregnancy were “challenging,” and she said that period of her life is over. “The ship has sailed.”

Aniston has constantly faced media speculation and rumors about her being pregnant. In 2016, presumptuous headlines prompted the celebrity to publish an op-ed in HuffPost denying the pregnancy rumors. At the time, she wrote that she was “fed up with the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of ‘journalism.'”

She said in the interview that she had no regrets about that time.

“I actually feel a little relief now because there is no more ‘can I? Maybe. Maybe. Maybe,’” she said. “I don’t have to think about that anymore.”

When the star divorced Justin Theroux in 2018, there was widespread speculation about why the couple split. Some guessed that they broke up because Aniston wouldn’t have kids. which Aniston addressed in the Allure story, saying the rumors were “absolute lies.”

She said the narrative at the time was that she was selfish.

“I just cared about my career,” she reflected. “And God forbid a woman is successful and doesn’t have a child.”

Anniston has received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow celebrities. Kaley Cuoco, who is currently expecting her first child, posted an Instagram story thanking the actress for sharing her fertility story.

“You never ever know what people are going through behind the scenes,” Cuoco wrote. “Stop assuming and judging every little thing!”
