Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux recently split after five years of dating plus over two years of marriage.
In a joint statement, the couple said that they plan to remain friends but are not working out romantically anymore. “We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship,” the statement read. “Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.”
Sources tell People that the pair faced major issues throughout their entire relationship. One big problem was that while Aniston loved living on the west coast, Theroux was partial to the east, and they would often spend time apart so they could be in their preferred destinations.

“Ever since they became serious, the living issue often made them bicker. It was always hard for Jen to understand why Justin didn’t like, or at least could learn to like L.A., when she was in L.A.,” the source told the magazine. “With Jen feeling so strongly about living in LA and disliking New York City so much, she wanted Justin to be happy and that’s why she agreed that he should spend so much time in New York City.”
Further, the insider shares that the idea of marriage was never very important to either party. “One wonders why they got married in the first place” because “nothing really changed” between them. “When they finally did start to plan it seriously, it was more like ‘Let’s have a great party with all of our friends and go on a fun trip. [But] they had the same issues before they got married as caused them to split.”
They are “very different people,” the source continued. “Jennifer loves her life in Los Angeles, and if anything, she has grown more attached to being there. Justin is not that comfortable or happy in Los Angeles all the time. He loves New York and always has.”
Another source told The Sun that Aniston has already moved all of Theroux’s things out of her L.A. home. “Obviously, things were over back in December, so Justin’s things were packed up a while ago, but now the statement is out there, she can move his things out,” the source explained. “She’s very practical in a way, and who wants their exes things hanging around their house? She’s planning to move furniture and objects that he chose for the house too. She’s reimagining her living space right now.”
