Jelena Jankovic Takes Herself Out Of Japan Women's Open After Hip Injury

Tennis pro Jelena Jankovic was forced to take herself out of the Japan Women’s Open due to a hip injury.

Jankovic, currently one of the top ten women’s singles players, was reportedly injured during the China Open Women’s final match, in which she competed against tennis superstar Serena Williams. During the match on Sunday, Jankovic asked for a brief pause during the second set for medical assistance. She finished the match, losing 6-2, 6-2 to Williams and earning herself a second place trophy.

Jankovic was scheduled to participate in the Japan Women’s Open, but her hip injury is taking precedence. Yesterday she tweeted her excitement for TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul, writing, “So excited to be going to Istabul, my 5th championships!”

If her tweet is any indication, Jankovic plans on compete in the upcoming Istanbul competition, which begins Oct. 22, despite her hip injury.

In August, Jankovic said that she felt better and stronger than ever.

“Now I really enjoy training, and I’m pretty healthy. I have a little bit [of pain] in my knee, but that’s not a major thing. I enjoy competing, and I enjoy spending time on the court,” Jankovic told USA Today.

Jankovic also expressed her desire to reclaim her number one spot.

“I was in the Top 10 or Top 5 for five consecutive years, and I was No. 1 player in the world. So I know what it takes to be there and how tough it is to be there day in, day out. So I just want to try to come back, and I want to give my best. We’ll see – so far so good,” Jankovic said.

It is unclear how her recent hip injury will affect her plans.
