Jeffrey Epstein was found dead by a apparent suicide in his Manhattan jail cell Saturday morning.
This comes just weeks after he was found in his cell with marks around his neck suggesting either a suicide attempt or assault. Usually, this kind of behavior would put somebody on suicide watch, but apparently it was unclear if this was the case for jailed billionaire financier.
Epstein was jailed for charges related to sex trafficking charges with girls as young as fourteen. According to Federal prosecutors, he used employees and associates to lure girls to his residences and then paid some of his victims to recruit other girls for him to abuse. His death came just a day after a batch of court documents was unsealed.
Epstein had apparently hanged himself and was found unresponsive around 6:30 a.m. ET. Attorney General William Barr said he was “appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead” while in federal custody. “Mr. Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered,” Barr added.
A source close to the case says that Barr was livid at the events surrounding the Epstein case and is determined to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.
Victims however still want justice and plan to pursue it in means of Epstein’s estate. Lisa Bloom, a lawyer for some of the alleged victims, tweeted that their pursuit of justice will continue in regards to the case.
