Jeff Bezos set the record for the most expensive home sale in California’s history when he purchased a mansion that had previously belonged to billionaire film studio exec David Geffen for $165 million.
The property features two guest houses, a tennis court, and a large garden. The landscaping alone reportedly cost Geffen $20 million to renovate. The mansion itself is 13,600-square-feet with eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms.
Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, had reportedly been touring Los Angeles mansions for weeks before settling on this one in Beverly Hills.

The Georgian mansion was built in the 1930s by Jack L Warner of the Warner Bros media empire. The property was purchased by Geffen in 1990 for $47.5 million, which was the national record at the time. The property featured a nine-hole golf course, and garages with their own gas pumps at the time, though it’s unclear if these are still a part of the property today.
Bezos also paid another $90 million for a plot of land near the mansion that had been owned by the late Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates. That deal was made by Bezos Expeditions, which is an entity that Bezos makes his investments through. Bezos also owns the Washington Post through Bezos Expeditions.
Bezos also owns the biggest house in Washington DC, the former Textile Museum, which comes in at 27,000-square-feet. He bought it in 2016 for $23 million. He also purchased a penthouse, along with the two apartments below, overlooking Madison Square Park in Manhattan for $80 million last year.
Although this all sounds like an exuberant amount of money, compared to Bezos’ $130.7 billion net worth, it seems like a drop in the bucket.
