Jeff Bezos Purchases Fourth Private Jet For $80 Million, As His Carbon Footprint Reaches 17 Times The Average American

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has purchased a fourth private jet and raised further concerns about the environmental impact of such extravagant private air travel.

Bezos bought his jet, the Gulfstream G700, last month for a staggering price of $80 million. According to publicly available flight data, Bezos’ Gulfstream G700 has made 28 flights in just 39 days, and left a carbon footprint of 264 tons. This is 17 times the average annual emissions of an American.

Bezos’ fleet of private aircraft also includes two Gulfstream G650 models and a Pilatus PC-24.

The Gulfstream G700 is considered one of the largest and most advanced private jets in the world. It boasts a maximum range of around 7,500 nautical miles and a top speed of Mach 0.925. This equates to roughly 92.5% of the speed of sound, which equates to approximately 710 mph. The aircraft is equipped with 20 panoramic windows and a “whisper-quiet cabin with 100% fresh, plasma-ionized air replenished every two to three minutes,” according to the manufacturer.

In an effort to mitigate concerns about the environmental impact, Bezos’ representatives have stated that he uses sustainable aviation fuel and pays for carbon offsets. However, analysts assert that these measures are not enough to justify the excessive carbon emissions generated by the frequent use of private jets.

Bezos kept his new purchase quiet for a month with the FAA’s Privacy ICAO aircraft address
(PIA) program, through which private jet owners use a temporary aircraft registration to hide their flight history.

On Wednesday, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index valued Bezos’ net worth at $203 billion. Bezos is the second richest person in the world, only ranked behind Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk is also believed to have ordered a Gulfstream G700.

Bezos has been spotted frequently on his superyacht off the Greek islands with his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez.
