At the vice presidential debate on Tuesday, candidate JD Vance stole the show with what many believed to be excessive use of eyeliner.
Vance and his opponent, Tim Walz, maintained a civil disposition toward one another throughout the debate but made frequent jabs at each other’s running mates.
Many online suggested that Vance was wearing eyeliner. “Fun inside fact: JD Vance has to do his lil ‘side eye’ thing once every three minutes per the terms of his contract with L’Oreal Paris ColorLast™ Eyeliner,” one user wrote on X.
Comparisons of Vance’s debate night look to emo musicians have spread across the internet. However, indicted former Rep. George Santos (R-New York) supported Vance’s look and posted on X, “Can anyone confirm Vance is on Ozempic? He’s looking thin and good!”
Santos later tweeted that Vance “is not wearing eyeliner!”
On the flip side, viewers notice a friendship bracelet around Democratic opponent Tim Walz’s wrist. His campaign sells a similar style for $20.
While Walz stumbled over his answer to the first question about the crisis in the Middle East, Vance attempted to avoid the question altogether, which provided a general theme to the two’s answers throughout the debate.
CBS News’ host Margaret Brennan tried to bring up a question about immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. Still, Vance wouldn’t allow a topic shift, instead continually speaking over her about a specific emergency visa. Brennan responded, “Thank you, Senator, for explaining the legal process.”
On TruthSocial, Trump dismissed the moderators as “young ladies” who were clearly “extremely biased.”
When moderators corrected Vance’s comments on immigration, Vance complained, “You said you wouldn’t fact-check me.”
Walz ended by thanking the viewers who tuned in for the debate instead of Dancing with the Stars.
As the debate concluded, many viewers agreed that its primary purpose was to provide meme-able material for either side’s supporters.
